CORINE Land Cover Iceland 2024 (CLC)
CORINE Land Cover (CLC) 2024 and CLC Change 2018-2024 are datasets produced under the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service, part of the European Union's Earth observation programme, formerly known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security).
CORINE Land Cover provides harmonised and consistent information on land cover and land cover changes across Europe. The programme was initiated in 1985, with the first reference year being 1990, and has since established a long-term time series of land cover information through successive updates for the reference years 2000, 2006, 2012, 2018, and now 2024.
CLC products are derived through the visual interpretation of satellite imagery by national teams from EEA member and cooperating countries, following a common methodology and nomenclature. The dataset is based on a hierarchical three-level classification system comprising 44 land cover classes. Key mapping parameters include a minimum mapping unit (MMU) of 25 hectares for status layers, a minimum width of 100 metres for linear features, and a minimum mapping unit of 5 hectares for land cover change (LCC) mapping.
The resulting national land cover inventories are further integrated into a seamless land cover map of Europe. Land cover and land use (LCLU) information is important not only for land change research, but also more broadly for the monitoring of environmental change, policy support, the creation of environmental indicators and reporting. CLC datasets provide important datasets supporting the implementation of key priority areas of the Environment Action Programmes of the European Union as protecting ecosystems, halting the loss of biological diversity, tracking the impacts of climate change, assessing development in agriculture and implementing the EU Water Framework Directive, among others. - Access to data is based on a principle of full, open and free access as established by the Copernicus data and information policy Regulation (EU) No 1159/2013 of 12 July 2013. This regulation establishes registration and licensing conditions for GMES/Copernicus users. Free, full and open access to this data set is made on the conditions that: 1. When distributing or communicating Copernicus dedicated data and Copernicus service information to the public, users shall inform the public of the source of that data and information. 2. Users shall make sure not to convey the impression to the public that the user's activities are officially endorsed by the Union. 3. Where that data or information has been adapted or modified, the user shall clearly state this. 4. The data remain the sole property of the European Union. Any information and data produced in the framework of the action shall be the sole property of the European Union. Any communication and publication by the beneficiary shall acknowledge that the data were produced “with funding by the European Union”.

- Statement
- The Corine Land Cover database for Iceland has been updated for the reference year 2024. Main objective of the project was the detection, identification and mapping of all land cover changes larger than 5 ha. Satellite images acquired in 2024 were used for image interpretation. Topographic maps, GoogleEarth and high resolution public map services (e.g. ja.is) were used to support the interpretation process. The latest version of the InterCange Support Package software (InterChange 4.2.5.1) was used for computer assisted visual photo-interpretation. Main steps of the processing were the following: 1. Detection of changes of 5 hectare or more, 2. Revision of CLC2018 data layer in the areas of changes and 3. Creation of CLC2024 status layer by integration of CLC2018 and CLC changes 2018-2024 data.
